WEOF is pleased to provide an annual $1200 grant to each of the six WSD schools to fund assemblies that expose students to the performing and cultural arts and/or enrich students’ opportunities for social, emotional, and/or cultural awareness.
Assemblies have ranged from professional author visits to theatrical performances to a BMX Stunt Show with an anti-bullying message and more.
Most recently, LGE, WHS, and WMS held an assembly presented by Robert Boudwin, motivational speaker. Mr. Boudwin is a 1992 WHS graduate who was the Trojan mascot while in his senior year at the high school. He went on to serve as The University of Delaware's Blue Hen mascot and, most notably, created and performed as Clutch the Bear, the Houston Rockets' mascot, from 1995-2016. While Boudwin was the Rockets' mascot, Clutch the Bear (and Boudwin) became the first NBA mascot to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.
Mr. Boudwin visited the three schools to talk about hard work, resiliency, creativity, and the power of pursuing dreams. LGE was especially lucky to have Newton the Dragon visit. Newton is Boudwin's signature character and "Houston's Smartest Dragon."
